India ranks third in the global ranking for installed renewable energy capacity, according to statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as of December 2025. As stated by the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, the country has overtaken Brazil and now trails only China (2,258 GW) and the USA (467.9 GW). India’s total renewable energy capacity has reached 250.5 GW.
According to the Minister, during the financial year 2025–2026 (which ended on March 31, 2026), a record 55.3 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity was commissioned, nearly double the previous year’s figure. The total installed capacity of non-fossil sources (renewables + nuclear energy) amounted to 283.5 GW. The share of «green» generation reached 51.5% of the country’s total electricity consumption (203 GW) in July 2025.
India achieved its target of a 50% share of non-fossil capacity as early as June 2025 – five years ahead of its commitments under the Paris Agreement. The country plans to reach 500 GW by 2030.
Particular growth was shown in solar energy (150.3 GW, a 53-fold increase since 2014) and wind energy (56.1 GW, with a record annual addition of 6.05 GW).
