Hierarchy of Directness

Effective partnership between businesspeople from Africa and Russia begins with an understanding of the profound differences between their business cultures. What is important for an African businessman to know in order to conduct a productive dialogue with a Russian partner? This is explained by Louis Gouend, founder of the African Business Club and Chairman of the Commission for Diaspora and Media Relations at the Lomonosov Moscow State University’s Russian-African Club.

Several fundamental differences can be identified in the business cultures of Russia and Africa. First, there is a different degree of initial formality in interaction, which sets the tone for all subsequent communication. In Russia, there is greater formality. Second, there is basic respect for hierarchy among Russian partners. This is not bureaucracy but rather a system of strategic guarantees creating a reliable foundation for long-term projects. The third difference is the different speeds and depth of the transition from strictly business to trusting partnership. In Africa, this transformation is faster and easier.

Firmness on matters of principle combined with flexibility in seeking compromises is characteristic of Russian businesspeople. Emotional expressiveness and communication directness are most often a sign of deep involvement and genuine interest. Such openness helps in holding a more substantive and productive dialogue, minimizing the risk of misunderstanding.

My main advice for African entrepreneurs planning to do business in Russia is to study its cultural code thoroughly and respect it. Demonstrate how serious your intentions are through impeccable preparation, structured proposals, and an understanding of the chain of command. Theory and literature will provide an initial understanding but genuine mutual enrichment is achieved only in practice, through respectful dialogue and a willingness to learn from one another.
