But the center of the demographic shift is already moving. According to calculations by BRICS Business Magazine based on data from the World Bank and the UN, 412.5 million people over the age of 65 currently live in the 10 BRICS countries – 48.3% of all people of this age worldwide.

China already has about 210 million people over the age of 65, Russia has the highest proportion of elderly people among the bloc’s countries – 18% of the population, and India, despite its reputation as a young economy, already has about 108 million people over the age of 65.

And the most rapid changes are yet to come. By 2050, the number of Indians over the age of 60 could reach 346–347 million; in Ethiopia, it will grow from 6.1 million to 18.7 million; in Egypt, from 8.6 million to 23.1 million; and in South Africa, from 5.2 million to 12.3 million.

This situation is already forcing economists and governments to consider who will work, who will fund pensions and healthcare, how long a person will have to remain economically active, and whether it is even possible to live 80 years by the rules created for a life of 50 or 60.

These were precisely the questions discussed at the online panel «Demography Decides Everything,» hosted by the New Economic School. BRICS Business Magazine special correspondent Teya Dateshidze attended the discussion and selected five of its key ideas.

1. We have learned to live longer, but institutions have not had time to adapt

Over the past century and a half, humanity has achieved what can be called a longevity revolution. As Irina Kalabikhina, a professor at Moscow State University, noted during the discussion, a hundred years ago the average life expectancy was about 30 years, whereas today in developed countries it is approaching 80 years. The decline in infant mortality, advances in medicine, and the emergence of effective drugs have radically transformed the age structure of the population.

But social institutions changed far more slowly. Education is still concentrated in the first quarter of life. Pension systems were built in an era when the period after leaving the labor market was significantly shorter. For a long time, healthcare focused on saving people from infections and acute diseases, but now it increasingly faces illnesses of older age, such as dementia, and the need to preserve not only physical but also cognitive function.

2. 80 years of life with education at 25

According to Irina Kalabikhina, the modern education system was largely formed in the 19th century, whereas contemporary society already lives under completely different conditions. As working life grows longer, education must become continuous. People need to regularly update their professional skills and have the opportunity to retrain even after the age of 40 or 50. In other words, attending university at 45, 50, or 60 may gradually become just as normal as attending it at 20.

This also applies to attitudes toward workers’ age. An increase in the proportion of older people does not, in itself, mean an inevitable decline in innovative or entrepreneurial activity. The problem arises when institutions fail to give people the opportunity to maintain their professional level throughout their lives.

3. Retirement age without an age

Another controversial issue is where old age actually begins. The discussion addressed the idea proposed by demographers Sergei Scherbov and Warren Sanderson: to assess not the number of years already lived, but the expected remaining life expectancy.

Instead of a universal retirement age of 60, 65, or 67, one could use, for example, the age at which a person statistically has about 15 years left to live. This approach makes the pension system responsive to actual demographics rather than to a fixed number.

The explanation for why such an approach is needed is very simple, even if it is unpleasant to acknowledge: simply raising the retirement age cannot go on forever. If there are fewer workers and more pensioners, the pay-as-you-go system (where current workers fund payments to current retirees) comes under increasingly severe pressure. The solution must be sought in several areas at once: keeping people healthy and employed for longer, increasing productivity, developing funded savings instruments, and changing the very structure of working life.

4. Migration saves the labor market, but only for a short time

The most obvious answer to labor shortages is migration. But it is far more complex than it seems. As education levels rise, the local population becomes increasingly reluctant to take on physically demanding and low-paying jobs. Meanwhile, the demand for orderlies, caregivers, and workers in construction and logistics is not going away. On the contrary, an aging population only increases it.

Migrants partially close this gap. But migration does not eliminate the demographic problem – it shifts it to another dimension. Host countries have to address issues of integration, social burden, and the long-term employment of migrants. Countries people leave may face a labor drain and an economy dependent on remittances. Therefore, migration can ease personnel shortages, but it cannot replace labor market reform.

5. An aging society runs on invisible labor

Another economic effect of aging is almost invisible in conventional statistics. The longer people live, the more time is required to care for them in old age – and a significant portion of this work is done at home for free. It is barely accounted for in GDP statistics.

During a discussion at the New Economic School (NES), it was estimated that if unpaid domestic labor (childcare, elderly care, and household management) were converted into monetary terms, its value could amount to roughly 25% of GDP. Thus, in an aging society, the care economy becomes one of the largest hidden industries. And the burden here falls disproportionately on women, reducing their employment and career opportunities.

What this means for businesses in BRICS countries

The demographic situation within BRICS is extremely heterogeneous. Russia and China are already in the phase of mature aging. Brazil is rapidly moving in the same direction. India and Indonesia are still younger for now. Egypt and Ethiopia are even younger, but the number of elderly people there will grow very quickly. In the UAE, the picture is further altered by the enormous share of labor migrants.

This difference can be not only a problem but also a resource. Some countries are already compelled to develop care technologies, pension products, medical services, and adult retraining systems. Others are only approaching this stage and can draw on the experience of others.

This gives rise to a new market – the longevity economy: medicine, insurance, adapted housing, robotic care, educational platforms for adults, financial products for older age groups, and technologies for preserving cognitive functions.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization, by 2050 about 80% of the world’s elderly population will live in low- and middle-income countries. This means that the main market for goods and services for an aging society will gradually shift precisely to where the largest economies of BRICS and the Global South are located today.

[5,1042,3
["post-5711","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-agenda","category-brics-plus-news","category-main-issue

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
