JJain studied physics at a college in Jaipur and at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, then continued his education and work in the United States. In the late 1980s, he proposed an explanation for the unusual behaviour of electrons at ultra-low temperatures and in strong magnetic fields. Jain showed that a complex system of interacting electrons can be represented as special quasiparticles \u2013 composite fermions. In simplified terms, such a fermion is an electron bound to a quantum vortex. Jain\u2019s model explained a number of observed quantum states and predicted new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jain built most of his scientific career in the United States and has been working at Pennsylvania State University since the late 1990s. In recent years, however, his connection with Indian science has once again become direct: in 2024, Jain was elected a foreign member of the Indian National Science Academy and, in 2026, he became the founding director of the new Lodha Theoretical Physics Institute in Mumbai. The Institute\u2019s mission is to advance fundamental physics in India and attract internationally renowned scientists to work there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jainendra Jain is the first scientist of Indian origin to receive one of the most prestigious international physics awards: the Wolf Prize in Physics.
