The government has authorised duty-free imports of 1m tonnes of raw sugar in an effort to cool domestic prices and replenish stocks ahead of the festive period and wedding season, when consumption of sweets traditionally surges. India normally produces 32m\u201334m tonnes of sugar a year, against domestic consumption of 28m\u201329m tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several factors are at work. The harvest has fallen short of expectations: production this season is estimated at around 30.6m tonnes, compared with an initial forecast of 34.3m. Sugar-cane crops have been hit by the fungal disease red rot, infestations of top borer and flooding following heavy rains. At the same time, demand is rising ahead of the festive and wedding seasons, while the authorities reckon that speculation and stockpiling are adding further pressure to the market. As a result, sugar prices in India have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2302018&amp;lang=1&amp;reg=3\">risen<\/a> by almost 16% in just one month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The global market reacted immediately: sugar futures rose by around 4% following the announcement of the imports. The global deficit in the 2026\/27 season is estimated at roughly 3.3m tonnes, while world prices were already elevated. Now one of the world\u2019s biggest producers is also becoming a major buyer: an additional 1m tonnes of demand could provide further support for prices and intensify competition for supplies, particularly from Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a rare reversal in the market.
