Earlier this week, it emerged that S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices is considering upgrading Nigeria\u2019s classification from a <strong>standalone<\/strong> market to <strong>frontier market<\/strong> status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction is significant. Global index providers classify markets as developed, emerging or frontier. Frontier markets occupy a middle ground: they are smaller and less liquid than emerging markets, yet sufficiently open and accessible to attract international investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, standalone status effectively excludes a market from the major global index universe. Nigeria received this classification following its currency crisis, when foreign investors struggled to repatriate profits because of dollar shortages and restrictions imposed by the central bank. Under such conditions, index-tracking funds face considerable difficulties buying and selling Nigerian equities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A return to frontier-market status would signal a restoration of investor confidence. It would open the door to capital from global investment funds, improve liquidity on the Nigerian Exchange Group and raise the market\u2019s profile among international investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial stocks have led the rally on the Lagos exchange. One of the most striking examples is <strong>Fortis Global Insurance Plc<\/strong>, whose shares have surged 1,400% in US dollar terms since the beginning of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the year\u2019s more unexpected market stories.
